The spokesman, Jim McGrath, said doctors had noticed recently that Mrs. Bush’s aortic valve had started to harden. The surgery was scheduled last week after Mrs. Bush, 83, began to be short of breath. Mr. McGrath said Mrs. Bush was already up and talking.
