Texas Independence Day

Today, March the 2nd, marks the 173 anniversary of Texas Independence Day. Despite what many people think, Texas Independence Day does not mark the day Texas won its independence from Mexico in an 18 minute battle (the battle of San Jacinto), but the date the Texas Declaration of Independence was signed in 1836.

Unfortunately I’m not in my home state but in these frozen hinterlands known as Boston - "Yankee Land" if you will. But to celebrate Texas Independence Day I’ve decked myself in my best duds, shined my boots, popped open my last Shiner and eaten myself some steaming chili.

And in case you’re wondering why it’s considered an Independence Day for Texas, let me remind all y’all that Texas was its own country before it joined the US of A. So yeah, maybe we Texans are a bit smug with Texas Independence Day and all, but if you’d lived in Texas for a while you’d understand why we’re so proud. And only Texas music will play today, with the Old 97s and Max Stalling taking up the majority of my time. But iIf anyone’s got any other Texas musical suggestions, I’m all ears.
