adam lambert mad world

Where’s Gary Jules when you want him on an “American Idol” conference call? I want to know how he felt about Adam Lambert’s haunting version of “Mad World.”
Then call Michael Stipe and see if he minds that everyone thinks he’s the one who sang this, not Gary Jules. After that, call up the lads from Tears for Fears and check their blood pressure when everyone forgets it all started with them.
Either way, it literally ends with Adam Lambert. He closed out Tuesday’s “songs from the year they were born” show with "Mad World."
Lambert was born in 1982, the year of “E.T.” and “Gandhi,” when the average annual income was $21,000 and the average cost of a new house was $82,000. It was also the year of “Mad World” and Adam’s haunting, stripped-down version is destined to be a goth anthem for the Millennials.
Give him credit, he knows his audience. Even without the spiky hair and makeup, he’s still Mr. Emo, singing straight to his fans. I love this look. I’m consistently more interested in the scaled-back Adam. For me, this performance ranks with “Tracks of My Tears.” Still not so into the screamy meamy stuff like “Ring of Fire” and “Play That Funky Music.”

Other people did perform Tuesday night – seven others, actually. Guess we shouldn’t ignore them completely, even though some of them (Lil, Scott and Danny) deserve it.

I have no idea what the judges hear when Danny Gokey sings, but I must be going tone deaf. Perhaps I’m mesmerized by the new glasses (every single week). He’s officially overrated.

Lil Rounds went out of her way to copy Tina Turner to such an extent I thought she must be sticking it to the judges. If it wasn’t on purpose, she must be like me when it comes to Danny Gokey. She’s just not listening.

Scott MacIntyre … should be going home Wednesday. But people love him. I actually thought his “The Search Is Over” was one of his best performances, but that’s not saying much.

Anoop Desai, on the other hand, really did have one of his best performances. Like Adam, he is best when he slows it down (and stops pretending he’s a rap star). My only complaint was that green and white horizontal striped shirt. Felt like I was watching Bert of Bert and Ernie.

For some reason the judges weren’t that into Kris Allen this week. I thought his “All She Wants To Do Is Dance” was pretty good, especially considering he was being swallowed whole by a group of girls.
Allison Iraheta … another deaf moment, but not in the singing sense. We’re both hearing her fantastic Kelly Clarkson voice. But why do they think she has no personality? Didn’t they hear her impressions last week? Her goofy laugh? She has a great bubbly attitude.

Still, only one “Idol” contestant got a standing ovation from Simon. Guess which one.
